2 min read
Hello and welcome to the official blog of SouthwestRuns (SWR)! We’re thrilled to have you join us on this exciting journey as we continue to grow, compete, and make a positive impact on our community.
Who We Are
SouthwestRuns (SWR) started in 2019 as a simple idea: to bring people together through the love of basketball. What began as a casual weekend scrimmage has grown into a thriving grassroots club with a mission to empower youth, support community development, and provide competitive opportunities for basketball enthusiasts of all ages.
Under the visionary leadership of our founder, Khalid Walker, SWR has evolved from humble beginnings to become a key player in the local basketball scene. Our men’s team currently competes in Division 2 of the London Metropolitan Basketball League, with ambitions to reach the Premier Division. But SWR is about more than just competition — it’s about community.
Our Mission & Vision
At SWR, we believe basketball can be a force for good. Our mission is to provide opportunities for young people to develop their skills, build character, and foster a sense of belonging. Through basketball, we aim to inspire the next generation to strive for greatness both on and off the court.
Our vision is to create a basketball community where every player, regardless of background, has access to training, mentorship, and pathways for growth. By working together with local partners and supporters, we’re building an environment where young people can thrive.
What We Do
We’re not just a club — we’re a movement. Here’s a glimpse of our key initiatives:
Men’s Basketball Team: Competing in Division 2 of the London Metropolitan Basketball League, with a clear goal of reaching the Premier Division.
Youth Development: We partner with local organizations like Croydon Elite Basketball Club, Jimmy Asher Foundation, and Unique Talent, to run youth tournaments, free weekly training sessions. SWR has also assist Surrey Rams Basketball club to run a HAF (Holiday Activities and Food) camps.
Community Engagement: SWR is committed to giving back. Our free sessions and youth tournaments provide safe spaces for young people to play, learn, and grow.
Why We’re Here
The world of grassroots basketball faces significant challenges, from limited funding to access to quality facilities. That’s why we’re committed to building a sustainable future for our club. With our vision and these challenges in mind, we’re actively seeking sponsorship and support from individuals, businesses, and organisations who believe in the power of sport to change lives.
